Week 9 - Jekyll and Hyde

My Musical of the Week this week is Jekyll and Hyde
I found this one through my high school marching  band. My mom was the color guard director when they marched a show that was based off of this musical. It was actually a really cool show! And I fell in love with the music. I haven't ever seen this performed, but I am sure that it is also a fantastic show.

Week 7- Into the Woods

My Musical of the Week this week is Into the Woods
I saw this when I was in High School, and started listening to the soundtrack. Then I found it on Netflix and watch it ALL THE TIME. I am super pumped that they are making a movie! Though skeptical of how good it will actually be...

Week 6 - Anything Goes

My Musical of the Week this week is Anything Goes

This is a musical that I had heard nothing about until a certian miss Sutton Foster came about. Then I fell in love (With both the musical and the actress). Its not that it wasnt a great musical without her, its just that I was new to the musical theater world and hadnt heard of it before. I recently found out that my High School did this when I was in 5th grade, so there's that...

Week 5 - Newsies

My Musical of the Week this week (11/4 through 11/10) is Disney's Newsies!

Based on the 1992 Disney film, Newsies is the tale of newsboy Jack Kelly, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. When Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies his army of Newsies to strike.

Unlike most of my Musicals of the Week, I haven't actually seen this one. During my last trip to New York, I passed by the Nederlander Theatre and saw the poster for Newsies. Like with most theaters in New York, during the day they have music from the show playing outside the theater. I heard the music and instantly added it to my list. Newsies has, by far, one of the catchiest scores I have ever heard. I enjoy the entire score but my favorite songs are "King of New York" "Seize the Day" and "Watch What Happens". Newsies has won many awards, including the Tony for original score and choreography. In addition to having AMAZING music, the dancing aspect of this show is intense. Newsies is #1 on my list of shows to see next time I go to New York.

Week 4 - Wicked

My Musical of the Week this Week is Wicked!
This is one of those stereotypical favorite musicals, but there is a reason Wicked is as popular as it is. Its FANTASTIC! I have seen both the Broadway and the tour and they are both outstanding! There have been many different cast changes, but they are all great!
We have all seen the movie The Wizard of Oz, now there are many different movies (and musicals) that tell the story of the magical land of Oz, but Wicked is by far my favorite. Mainly because it gives more of a back story. I have yet to read the book. I own it and keep meaning to, but being a computer engineering student takes up most of my time. One day I will read it though.

Week 3 - Cinderella

My Musical of the Week this week is Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella
Ok. We have all seen the Disney movie of Cinderella, but this is 100 times better! I absolutely love this musical. Laura Osnes is AMAZING and she deserved/ earned that Tony nomination. She isn't the only one who is good, the entire cast is great at what they do!
I like all of the music, but my I have favorite songs. They are all in a row. It starts with "In My Own Little Corner (Reprise)", "Impossible", Transformations, "It's Possible", "Ten Minutes Ago", "Cinderella Waltz". Its kind of all one continuous sequence that takes you from Ella with Marie all the way through the ball with Prince Topher.

There is something about this show that just makes me happy :)

Week 2 - My Fair Lady

My Musical of the Week this week is My Fair Lady
We did this musical my sophomore year of high school and I loved it! I was not on stage for this one, I was actually playing trumpet in the orchestra. So I was under the stage. This musical is one of my first to be a part of and will always have a special place in my heart. My favorite songs are, from a orchestra stand point are the Opening Overture and "The Rain in Spain". From a singing stand point I love "On the Street Where You Live".

PlayBill Plot Synopsis:
An English professor of phonetics makes a bet that he can transform a Cockney flower girl into a lady.

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Week 1 - Little Shop of Horrors

My Musical of the Week this Week is Little Shop of Horrors

This was our fall musical my Senor year of high school and we had our lead nominated for best actor at DSM. I did not perform in it, but I felt as if I did. I dont really have "Favorite" songs for Little Shop, we have a love hate relationship. Some days I will love it and the next I cant stand it. I do enjoy the opening and Skid Row though.

PlayBill Plot Synopsis:
In this campy musical based on the 1960s cult horror film, nerdy Seymour, a florist's clerk, buys and nourishes a Venus fly trap-like plant, which he names for his beloved co-worker Audrey. The plant ultimately grows big enough to devour everything in its path.

Intro to My Musical of the Week

I have grown up around music and theater. I have always loved to sing, act, and speak in-front of crowds. Luckily there is something called Musical Theater that lets me do it all! I LOVE Musical Theater! In High School I was on the Interpretive Speaking team (Part of the Debate team). I was never actually in one of the Theater Classes, but was well known in the Theater department. Because of scheduling I had to choose between Iterp and Theater. I choose Interp because I loved public speaking. Luckily, Interp also lets you act. So I still got to act, just not on a stage...
I am currently in the middle of getting a Computer Engineering degree with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Houston. Yeah, I know. Its a long way away from musical theater, but I am in many theater classes (If only there was a theater minor). My dream is to be able to combine my love of theater and my love of technology in some way. I plan on moving to New York when I graduate so that I can be closer to the theater hub of the United States.
For years the majority of the music on my iPod has been the soundtracks from different musicals, but I found myself always listening to the same two or three (My favorite musicals of all time (It will be a different post all its own)). A couple of months ago I came up with the idea to listen to a different musical every week to help me get out of the cycle and to broaden my horizons. I have been working on a list for a while, and I have almost managed to come up with 52 musicals (one for each week of the year). Each week I will post what my musical of the week is, what my favorite songs are, and a little bit about the musical itself. I was going to wait until January to start with week 1 but I couldn't wait. So it starts with week 44 and I will back track to when I started in week 30.
